Little Free Library™

Little Free Library™

At Open Pages Project, every book opens the door to new possibilities. Our mission began with a simple idea: remove as many barriers to reading as possible by providing free books to children, teens, and families. By making books more accessible, we're helping build literacy, spark imagination, and create lifelong readers.

Through the installation of Little Free Library™ Book-Sharing Boxes, Open Pages Project brings free books directly into neighborhoods, making it easy for everyone to discover, share, and enjoy reading. Together, we're building a stronger, more connected community one library at a time.

Reading Programs

Our reading programs bring books to life in local schools and senior centers, creating opportunities for learning, conversation, and connection. Whether we're reading with young students or sharing stories with older adults, each visit helps foster a love of reading while strengthening the bonds that unite our community across generations.

OUR BOARD

Daniel Whitman

Co-Founder and C.E.O.

My love of reading has been a lifelong passion, and one of my greatest joys is sharing that love with my three sons as they discover the adventures, knowledge, and inspiration that books have to offer.

During my 20+ years working in my local school district, including 15 years in data analytics, I've seen firsthand the critical role early literacy plays in a child's academic success. Analyzing educational data has reinforced what research has long shown: children who develop strong reading skills early are better prepared to succeed throughout their educational journey.

That experience, combined with my belief that every child deserves access to books, inspired me to help create Open Pages Project. My goal is to remove barriers to reading, foster a lifelong love of books, and build a stronger, more literate community. One page, one reader, and one story at a time.

Favorite Book: Magician, Raymond E. Feist

Currently Reading:  The Eye of the Bedlam Bride , Matt Dinniman

Lissette (Alex) Whitman

Co-Founder and C.F.O.

For more than 10 years, I have had the privilege of working with children from preschool through high school. My background in Early Childhood Education, along with my experience supporting children with autism and disadvantaged youth, has shown me how life-changing encouragement, education, and access to resources can be. Those experiences inspired my passion for literacy and ultimately led me to help create Open Pages Project.

Nothing excites me more than helping children and families discover the joy of reading by providing free books to those who may not otherwise have access to them. I believe every child deserves the opportunity to fall in love with reading, regardless of their financial circumstances, and I am proud to help create opportunities for young readers to grow, imagine, and thrive through the power of books.

Favorite Book: Verity, Colleen Hoover

Currently Reading:  Nonprofit Management for Dummies, Sharon Farris, Beverly A. Browning, Maire Loughran

My mother was a voracious reader, and from a young age she instilled in me a lifelong love of books. Our home was always filled with stories, and some of my fondest childhood memories are of visiting the library together. Reading became more than a pastime-it became a gift that shaped my life.

When I became a parent, I was determined to pass that same love of reading on to my children. Today, I have the joy of sharing it with my grandchildren as well. Time and again, we’ve seen how early access to books helps children build confidence, develop a love of learning, and achieve greater academic success. But beyond the educational benefits, there is simply nothing quite like getting lost in the pages of a great book.

I am proud to support Open Pages Project, because every child deserves the opportunity to experience that unforgettable moment when they open a book for the first time and realize an entire world of imagination, adventure, and possibility is waiting for them.

Favorite Book: Little Women,  Louisa May Alcott

Currently Reading:  Connections in Death, J.D. Robb
